Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the nation’s oldest black sorority, are suing its president, Barbara McKinzi following claims that McKinzi used hundreds of thousands of dollars of the sorority’s money (via the group’s credit card) to purchase designer clothing, jewelry, and not one, but two life-size wax statues of herself.

According to AOL News, the lawsuit suggests that Alpha Kappa Alpha’s board of directors signed off on funds for McKinzi without ever consulting with the sorority’s membership. The lawsuit details how the board approved a $4,000 monthly pension for McKinzi upon retirement and even issued her a one million dollar life insurance policy.

Of course, the most curious purchase of all is the $900,000 spent to create two life-size wax statues of herself. In a statement issued by the sorority ths week, McKinzi stated that the lawsuit was full of “malicious allegations,” and that both statues were comissioned to “help defray overall expenses for our 2010 convention.”

Edward W. Gray Jr., an attorney representing the plaintiffs suing the Chicago-based sorority, spoke to reporters on Wednesday, and described McKinzi’s spending as “extraordinarily shocking if not illegal conduct.”
