Diploma Diaries: Making Friends After College
By Rachael Smith, Alumna of Radford University
In college, it’s so easy to make friends after that initial period of not knowing where you are and how to make your way around. You meet people everywhere — from classes, to the dorms, to parties.
But what about after college is over? It’s important to meet new people as you are a brand new grad! But the struggle is: Where are these “young” people in our cities and how can we meet them without being completely awkward?
For me, one of my friends ended up introducing me to a bunch of interns she works with and within the past few months, they have become my own friends. We go to the same bar for weekly trivia nights. This gives us a way to always make time for one another and get to know each other better in a social setting.
Look into young professional groups in the area. These are groups to help you network with others who are in their 20s, but also to make new acquaintances.
Look to your job for new friends! You may not like any of your co-workers, but they might have an awesome crew.
Join a local group that is centered around your hobbies. If you love to run, join a running club that may train for races! Most cities have a website filled with activities you can get involved with. Volunteer somewhere and get outside. Do the things that make you happy and see if there are groups who do the same.
Depending on the city you live in, Meetup.com can be pretty reliable. This site shows little groups that people have started to literally MEET new people!
Accept invitations. You may have to go alone, but you won't be once you get there! Don't be afraid to step outside the box.
It’s a scary thought to meet people who you haven’t known since pre-K, but you will also find that it is a breath of fresh air!
