In 2014, four male undergraduate students from North Carolina State University began to develop an idea. The students wanted to create something that would help empower women and protect them against date rape drugs. The students began to develop color-changing nail polish that could determine if a woman’s drink had been laced with common date rape drugs like Rohypnol, Xanax, or GHB.

To tell if her drink has been drugged all a young woman would have to do is stir her drink with her finger while wearing the nail polish. If the nail polish changes color, the woman will know that her drink is laced with a drug.

The product isn’t available yet, but they do have a name for their company, Undercover Colors. On Undercover Colors’ Facebook page, they’ve said that their purpose is to “shift the fear from the victims to the perpetrators.”

This is a good goal considering sexual assault among young women in college is fairly common. According to their Facebook page, 18% of women in the United States will be a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime. That means one in five women in the United States will be sexually assaulted.

So where are the students at right now with their developments? Since creating their idea, they’ve put their thoughts into action, hiring chemists to help develop a prototype faster. As of December 2014, they were looking to hire another chemist to help with their efforts. The more chemists they have, the faster they can put out their first product. Once the product is available, Undercover Colors will have the chance to diminish the sexual assault rate.
