A Chic (But Cheap) Guide to Fall Fashion
By Ashley Yenick, Student at Merrimack College
If you’re like me, you can’t wait for your favorite designer to debut their new season’s look. During Fashion Week, it’s always an exciting time to see which celebrities attend which shows and what designers come up with.
We’ve been keeping our eye on some runway shows and drooling over the great designs in the process. We’ve even created a Polyvore set so you can implement your own sense of style with these fall fashion trends.
#1 Studded Jackets
Like last season, studs are still in. Studs are put on everything, and jackets are no exception. The latest trend that we see is studs on denim jackets. We included a denim studded jacket from Forever21 in our Polyvore set so you can be chic but cheap!
A recurring theme for runway shows was grunge. That’s right, grunge! Think leather, plaid and studded clothing (and also some parts of the ‘90s!)
#2 Plaid Shirts
As mentioned above, grunge has hit the runway in full force. Many runway shows had plaid featured on skirts, shirts and dresses. In the Polyvore set, we included a simple plaid shirt so you can still be on trend and rock a cheap T-shirt.
#3 Military-Inspired Jackets
Military-inspired wear is still in season! This jacket we put in our Polyvore set has faux leather sleeves attached for an updated military look. You can pair this jacket with leggings or jeans with some combat boots.
#4 Beanies
Beanies are a trend that we’ve seen on celebrities recently. Ashley Benson of “Pretty Little Liars” and Kylie Jenner of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” were among the first to make beanies a trend this season. This beanie has the pun “Homies” on it in the font of Hermés, the French company. Beanies are more than just a winter hat this season!
#5 Leopard Print Shoes
Leopard has made an appearance on the runways for some time now, but only this season has leopard print been a big hit with shoes. Leopard heels, boots, wedges and sneakers are everywhere. To still be on trend without breaking your college budget, we picked leopard sneakers that you can add to any outfit and give it a wild flair.
#6 Structured Bags
This season is all about the structured bags. What is a structured bag? Structured bags usually have timeless designs and are often designed like “classic” bags that are usually boxy. Every college girl needs a structured bag in her closet for an accessory in an interview outfit or to dinner at a fancy restaurant!
#7 Geometric Jewelry
Last season, we saw a lot of geometric patterns on sweaters, shoes and bags. Now we see geometric jewelry everywhere, which is why we added a geometric necklace to our Polyvore set. This necklace is from Forever21, and you can buy it for $5.80. Now that’s being chic but cheap!
#8 Over-the-knee Boots
Fall boots will always be on trend, but there’s a new kind of boot that’s been hitting the runway: over-the-knee boots. Over-the-knee boots are popular at colleges for going-out clothes, but not actual clothes that you normally wear when you’re not going to a party. These boots are perfect with jeans or leggings!
These chic but cheap trends are perfect items to add to your fall wardrobe. All of these trends can be worn on campus or out with your best friends. If you’re looking for more inspiration, check out UChic’s Pinterest boards!
