The College Fashionista: Come Join the Harem (Pants, That Is)

Now that it’s getting nice and warm, time to whip out your… harem pants? Yeah, we’re not so sure either.

The drapey bottoms gotten their fair share of the spotlight on the runways, carrying over from the S/S 09 shows (Ralph Lauren, Paul Smith) into A/W 09 (Balmain, Christian Dior). But “ready-to-wear” doesn’t always mean that these are clothes we’re ready to wear— last week, Aussie actress Rachael Taylor bravely stepped out at the Chloe store opening in LA in a pair of the designer’s slouchy pants, and the reactions were none too kind (no one wants their outfit to be described as “MC Hammer-style.”)

But there are various degrees of droopy, and rocking the right pair obviously makes you That Girl who can “pull it off.” For some pairs that could actually work and take you from campus lounging to summer vacation, check out American Apparel, Silence & Noice at Urban Outfitters and Macy’s for a few good pairs- they are stylish but not über-trendy, slouchy but not complete sacks, and draw no unfortunate 80’s references. Now if only we could figure out how to wear the new socks-with-sandals trend…
