Dating 101: The Big Green Monster
My boyfriend and I have been together for almost four months. He’s basically the cutest, sweetest thing to ever pass my way and I often wake up wondering what I ever did to deserve such a good catch. Even though our relationship is fabulous and almost drama-free, there is still one recurring problem: the big, green monster better known as jealousy.
I blame it on being a Scorpio. I’m possessive. I like to know that when something is mine, I’m the only one who is going to use it. Or kiss it and call it cute-sy names, in this case.
But when girls in denim and low-cut floral print dresses linger by my man a little too long, I start to freak out. I mean, I know he’s cute. I also know that he has the coolest name ever. But that does not give you the right to brush up against his arm and ask him to tell you his life story, giggling and hair-flipping included.
So, in an attempt to cure my problem and squash the green monster for good, I did a little research. Supposedly, this is all due to a lack of self-esteem and trust on my part. However, I blame the former rather than the latter.
A few quick hints for other girls who find the monster rearing its ugly head:
1. Talk about your feelings openly with your partner.
2. Take a deep breath when you start to get jealous – and examine the situation from the other person’s point of view. Know that jealousy can ruin an otherwise perfect arrangement.
3. Understand and accept that you will never be able to control another person.
4. Work on building your own self esteem. That way, when he does talk to that girl from his Philosophy class with the really cute Chanel bag, you will know that you are just as wonderful as she is.
