Having a crush on someone in your dorm is so college. It’s what movies are made of. Not only is it convenient, but it’s exciting because you always have a chance of running into him. Should you go for it? Here’s a pros and cons list to help you decide.

Go for it if:
You have thick skin: If you make a move on this guy and he doesn’t reciprocate, is it going to bother you if you run into him every day for the next few months? Or what if he decides to go for a new girl? Will it bug you seeing him and her together all the time? If you are extremely sensitive, this probably isn’t a good idea.

You have common interests: Does he share your passion for cheering on the school’s football team? Ask him to go tailgating with you. Does he like playing Frisbee on the quad too? Ask him to hit up a quick game after class. If you have similar interests, it will be easier to find a reason to hang out, plus you’ll have more to talk about.

Run the other way if:
He’s a serial hook up artist: Observe how he acts around other girls. Many freshman guys are just looking to hook up – NOT find a girlfriend. Does he act like a womanizer? Is his room a revolving doorway? These are warning signs that you need to watch out. You deserve someone who thinks of you as a person instead of just a piece of ass.

He’s in your friend group: You’re new to college, and most likely the friends you make now are going to be the ones you keep for the rest of your college days. If he’s a close pal, or in your friend group, it probably isn’t worth it to pursue him. The chances of you lasting until graduation? Slim. The chances of you and him causing drama for the rest of your posse post-breakup? WAY HIGH.

But what if you’ve already made your move? What’s next?

My advice: He knows where you live and probably has your phone number/email. Don’t kid yourself or make excuses. If he wants to hang out or talk to you, I’m sure he’s smart enough to utilize these resources to find you. Don’t dwell on it. If you’re smart, you’ll take a step back and give him time to make his move.
