Post-Holiday Exhaustion Classified As “Social Jet Lag”
Feel like the first week back of school is kicking you in the butt? It may not be your new winter schedule or the fact that single digit temps make it a little too hard to crawl out of bed every morning. According to an article on ABC News, British researchers have coined the term "social jet lag" to describe that groggy feeling you get after too much partying and socializing during the holidays.
Similar to traditional jet lag, this feeling of "ehh," carries over once you get out of your normal sleeping pattern and can take days (or even weeks) to go away depending on how consitent you are in setting a nightly sleep schedule.
"The holidays relate to doing things that are out of the ordinary, such as drinking more alcohol, eating fattier foods and more stress in general," said Dr. Nancy Collop, director of the Emory Sleep Center in Atlanta. "There may be more reflux and other things that are not good for sleep."
But don't worry – everything will go back to normal as soon as you get back on track. Just don't try to pull an all-nighter anytime soon or plan on getting your groove on until you've recovered from the effects of the LAST big soiree you attended.
