Essential Accessories For Fall

Extras extras!

Today’s headline story: the extras you need to nail the perfect fall wardrobe. Here’s a run-down on fall’s hottest shoes, bags and other accessories!

The menswear trend extends to shoes with fall’s oxfords. Also known as wingtips or brogues, these leather “Dad” classics are being rocked by such It Girls as Sienna Miller, Peaches Geldof and even Emma Watson. A fun alternative to ballet flats and moccasins, oxfords work with jeans, mini skirts and everything in between! Try classic flat oxfords from Steve Madden, Opening Ceremony or Urban Outfitters for a boyish look, or don oxford-style heels from Nine West or Corso Cosmo for a cheeky feminine subversion of the masculine style.

As for heels, last fall’s booties are back with a vengeance. With thick straps, cut-outs, mixed materials and studding, work fall’s edgy look with substantial ankle booties and embellished heels. Check out Steve Madden, Aldo and Wet Seal to add rocker edge to even the sweetest of looks!

Let’s talk bags. After seasons of statement It bags like Fendi’s Spy bag and the ubiquitous Balenciaga motorcycle bag, we’ve returned to a more sane place where beauty and function trumps logos and in-the-know designs. Luckily for us students, large open-top totes are both useful and right on trend. Look for a bag with both top handles and a longer shoulder strap that works over the shoulder or across the body, like styles from Nine West, J. Crew or Marc by Marc Jacobs (a girl can dream, no?)

When you’re not schlepping books across campus, a classic chain-link purse is the stylish bag for night. It’s no secret that these bags channel Chanel’s iconic 2.55 bag with metal links and even quilted material, but there’s nothing wrong with emulating a classic (just don’t go so far as to stamp on your own interlocking C’s.) Worn by celebs from Alexa Chung to Rachel Bilson, the chain-link purse can be worn over the shoulder or across the body, and adds a vintage feminine touch to any outfit. Plus, as opposed to your tried-and-true clutch, the strap ensures you won’t leave your most important belongings behind at the end of the night.

And the last must-have extra for fall? Socks. No, we are not joking— knee-high and trouser socks were seen on countless fall runways, from Marc by Marc Jacobs and Patrick Robinson’s Gap to Marni and United Bamboo. A cheeky touch for your skirts and dresses, dark-colored socks rising out of booties and heels alike play with form and function. Test out the trend with Banana Republic’s subdued argyle, and pop over to J. Crew for a wide selection of styles plus great images that show you how to rock this style.
