Tyler Clementi’s Parents Announce Lawsuit Against Rutgers Following Suicide
Following the criminal investigation launched in the wake of his death, Tyler Clementi's parents have announced they will be filing a civil lawsuit against Rutgers University. Clementi's family insists the school didn't do enough to protect their son from cyber bullying (a source on a gay website had previously reported that Clementi had posted on a message board that he had alerted the university to the harassment he had received from his roommate but no actions were taken).
Meanwhile, Rutgers is denying responsibility and claims Clementi's suicide (while tragic) is not a direct result of their inattention to the issue. Says a school spokeswoman, "We at the university share the family's sense of loss of their son, who was a member of our community." "We also recognize that a grieving family may question whether someone or some institution could somehow have responsibility for their son's death. While the university understands this reaction, the university is not responsible for Tyler Clementi's suicide."
The Clementi family has six months to follow through on their claim before it expires.
