Get Empowered: Making Mistakes
Last night’s newscast on WNBC was the talk of the office this morning. The morning office-talk typically ranges from insipid gossip to noteworthy news stories, but today it was about a news blooper.
During the teaser for the 11 o’clock news, Sue Simmons, one of the anchors, slipped up—on live TV. After teasing a story, Simmons must have thought they were off-air. “What the f*** are you doing?” she yelled. What followed was a few seconds of silence and then a commercial break.
At the end of the newscast, Simmons apologized for using a word that many find offensive. On NBC’s Web site, they have also issued a written apology.
Although everyone in New York is talking about it this morning, I think that it will be old news by the end of the day. I’m sure Simmons is mortified, but what more can she do?
Nobody is perfect, not even people who have been in the industry for a while. Sue Simmons showed us that everyone is human. We all make mistakes and it’s important to acknowledge them and move on.
