Get Empowered: Protect Your Health During Flu Season
Although the first day of fall was back in September, here in New York it finally feels like fall. The air is crisp, the leaves are changing colors and Uggs are slowly making their way out of the closet. But, the fear of getting sick is surfacing as well.
Every year, right before Thanksgiving, I always get really sick. Whether it is small cold or the flu, sickness finds me. But, this year I have decided to protect my health. Just because the seasons change does not mean that my health has to change along with it.
My first resolution is to drink more water. Obviously a change in season shouldn’t warrant this change, but I figure now is a good a time as any to start. Aside from the internal advantages, water is also good for your complexion. It keeps your skin hydrated and gives you a natural glow, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
My next resolution is to put away the flip flops and open-toed flats. This is usually my least favorite resolution, but this season there are so many cute boots, not just Uggs, that are in style right now. While flip flops and flats are easy to slip on, their season has passed.
While you will have to store away some of your shoes, you don’t have to store away all your summer clothes. Thanks to the layered look, many of the shirts that you wore over the summer can be paired up with another shirt. Not only will you be warm, but you will also have doubled your wardrobe.
Scarves are one of my favorite fall accessories. Aside from their practicality, scarves really add a lot to an outfit. Although they haven’t fully hit the stores yet, Nordstrom and Bloomindales have a nice selection.
Finally, get a flu shot as soon as you can. Sometimes there are shortages with the shots depending on where you are from, but the second you hear of their availability, take it. Sometimes your school even offers it. Personally, I hate getting shots, but this is one that I willingly get. I would rather have a second of pain than spend a whole season sick.
