Get Empowered: World AIDS Day

During Thanksgiving, we take the time to reflect and give thanks for everything that we have. In my family, health is always in the top five.

Until now, I have never really thought about the important role that technology has on our health. Thanks to modern-day medicine, we have to power to detect and protect ourselves against many viruses and diseases, especially AIDS and HIV.

Usually I get so caught up in the flurry of holiday shopping, that I often overlook World AIDS Day. Every year, World AIDS Day is on December 1st. So don’t let this Saturday pass by without doing something to help out.

First and foremost, I cannot stress enough the importance of practicing safe sex. Last month I was fortunate enough to sit down and have lunch with sexuality educator Logan Levkoff, a huge advocate for condoms. One of the things we talked about was carrying condoms. There is a stigma against girls that carry condoms—they are seen as sluts. But, the truth of the situation is that they are smart and are making the right choice by protecting themselves and their partners. Believe it or not, Levkoff, who is happily married, always carries around condoms.

Protecting yourself and your partner is a great first step, but it does not stop there. There are so many simple things that you can do to help make a difference. When taking care of your holiday shopping, get gifts that are more than just material items.

The Gap is a great place to start. Their new Product Red campaign donates money to people in Africa that are affected with HIV and AIDS. Aside from being practical, these items represent so much more.

Finally, don’t be afraid to speak out for what you believe in. Above all else, you have a voice and why not use it to make a difference in someone’s life this holiday season.
