Y’all Are Crazy (No, Seriously)
Remember the days when everybody and their brother wasn't trippin' out over something? Yeah, we can't either. That's why we're not exactly surprised to read that the number of college students experiencing mental health issues is actually on the rise. Overachiever millenials, plus super-competitive programs, access to alcohol, prescription drug abuse, and sex – add it all together and what you have is a hotbed of post high school angst combined with today's technological advances. (Why break up in person or secretly talk s$@t about someone when you can just as easily do it via text or humiliate them via Facebook?)
While it's not surprising that relationship issues, test anxiety, and depression top the list of mental health complaints, more and more students are coming foward with eating disorders, cutting issues, thoughts of suicide, and biochecmical imbalances.
Why these and why now? Well, it doesn't take a shrink to figure out that three out of four of these encompass "control" elements – meaning, when you feel like your world is spinning out of control, taking things into your own hands (however disturbing) is sometimes the quickest way to a little peace of mind.
