Rodarte for Target!

And in today’s news… another designer collaboration!

Target will continue its GO International series with Rodarte, the up-and-coming design house that was crowned CFDA’s Womenswear Designer of the Year for 2009 after being named Swarovski Emerging Womenswear Designer of the Year only a year before, in 2008.

Clearly Rodarte is on the rise. The label, designed by sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, is beloved by industry insiders and celebrities alike, and their intricate and highly detailed dresses have been seen on A-listers such as Kirsten Dunst, Emma Watson and Reese Witherspoon.

And now… us! As normal Rodarte prices run in the four figures, the prospect of Rodarte in the price range of $9.99 – $79.99 is beyond thrilling. But there is some skepticism about the 55-piece collection, which will debut in stores and online at Target.com on December 20. Rodarte’s ethereal designs stand out for their hand-wrought detail and highly inventive mix of fabrics, from string, leather, lace, gauze, and metallics, all on a single garment. Known for evening clothes, Rodarte’s luxurious designs rely on the most exotic mix of materials and unexpected layering and draping. How well will this intricate craftmanship and quality of material translate into a Target line?

Rest assured, said a spokeman for Target. “The collection incorporates a rich mix of patterns and fabrications and everything from sequins and bows to faux fur. The key with Rodarte is layering.” The collection will consist “stand-alone pieces and pieces that can be worn together to create an ensemble by layering different patterns, textures and prints.”

Only time will tell how this quirky design duo translates their gorgeous cocktail confections for mass appeal. Regardless, this is one collaboration I am seriously excited about. Will you be on line on December 20th?
