Sorority Savvy: Balancing Sisters and School Friends

The life of a sorority sister is a busy one. It seems as though there are never enough hours in the day to get everything done. With so many Greek commitments and events to attend, it’s often hard to find a spare moment to socialize with non-Greeks. Here are some ways to find a balance between sisters and friends outside of Greek life.
Schedule Time with Non-Greeks
A large chunk of your schedule is dedicated to hanging out with Greeks, be it volunteering or meetings. While it’s great to be close to your sisters, your other friends may begin to feel left out. Since you have organized time to see your sisters, why not arrange time for your friends outside of Greek life? By organizing a meet up with your friends who aren’t Greek and scheduling around it, you can fit them in even when you’re swamped.
Study dates allow you to hang out with your friends while also getting school work done, a productive way to multitask and do two important things at once. Another way to make sure you’re spending time with other friends is to sign up for a club or class together. Having set social time to plan around forces you to treat it like a mandatory meeting.
Get Out of the House
If you live in a sorority house, make sure you are spending time with your non-Greek friends that you don’t live with. No matter how hectic your life is, you will constantly see the friends that you share a space with. However if you’re not careful, your other pals can fall by the wayside. Make an effort to fit everyone in. If you have the option, you might want to consider living with non-Greeks. This is another way to guarantee that you see your friends outside of Greek life.
Also, try to hang out outside of the house as much as possible in order to meet other friends who aren’t members of Greek life. Study in the library or a local coffee shop instead of in your room, go out for dinner, or head to the gym.
Introduce Your Sisters to Your Non-Greek Friends
Sometimes it can work to mesh your sisters with your other friends. Try mixing friends from each group by inviting them to parties or events with each other. This way neither group feels left out and your non-Greek friends are provided with more perspective and information about Greek life and why it’s important to you. They may even end up becoming friends!
