Trend Report: “Jersey Shore” Style

Has anyone in this country not seen Jersey Shore? From outrage to intrigue, everyone’s spent the last few months talking about MTV’s latest hit. It’s undeniable that the reality show has become a pop culture phenomenon. Though cast members “The Situation” and Snooki are living it up during their 15-minutes of fame, their wardrobe is still decidedly unworthy of the same attention.

Even before the show became a hit, any East Coaster could tell you the words “fashion” and “Jersey Shore”  are hardly synonymous – unless you’re into bedazzled Ed Hardy tops and boob-baring halters.
Imagine my dilemma as I mulled over what to wear for an upcoming Shore-themed fête. Looking like a proper “guidette” while remaining classy seemed impossible…until I realized the key is not to play copycat, but find inspiration in the tacky duds. The last thing any self-respecting fashionista should be doing is emulating the tasteless style of of a DD diva like JWOW, but if your wardrobe is craving a little boost of the Shore, here are some suggestions:

SKIN: “GTL” (Gym, Tan, Laundry) is the foundation of the guidette lifestyle, so bronzed skin is a must! Stay away from dangerous tanning beds and opt for a professional spray tan (Mystic Tan, $20) or an at-home solution (Neutrogena MicroMist Sunless Tanning Spray, $11).

MAKEUP: Create a dark, smoky eye with smudge-proof black eyeliner (Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner Pencil, $7) and a palette of shadows (try Smashbox Eye Shadow Trio in Panorama, $28). Use an eyelash curler on your lashes before plumping them up with black mascara that adds drama (like Maybelline The Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara, $6). Try adding a dot of shimmery highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes to make them pop (Maybelline Cool Effects Shadow/Liner pencil in Give Me Shivers, $6, works great). Buff on some bronzer (Ulta Powder Bronzer, $10) and keep lips simple with a swipe of clear gloss.

HAIR: Avoid recreating Snooki’s cartoonish pouf, but take steps to add volume to your tresses. Use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner (Aussie Aussome Volume Shampoo and Conditioner, $4.29 each), apply mouse to damp hair (Garnier XXL Thickening Mousse, $4.29) and blow dryer with your head down for an added boost. If you must, do a little teasing at the crown of your head and spritz with some hairspray.

OUTFIT: Dressing in the spirit of Jersey Shore doesn’t mean you have to sport a plunging neckline or True Religion booty shorts. Acting the part of a “guidette” is all about being seen and capturing everyone’s attention, but skin doesn’t need to be bared for that effect. Select bold, shiny, “look at me” pieces like the Glimmer Shoulder Top ($17.80) or the Captivate Leatherette Dress ($29.80), both from Forever 21.

Even with all the proper ingredients, you’ve got to have the right attitude to pull off the Jersey Shore style. Follow Sammi’s words of wisdom and remember that guidettes “pretty much know how to own it and rock it.” So go out, fist pump, and have fun with your new look!
