You’ve been there. We’ve been there. That dreaded moment when you break up with someone and are then forced to change your relationship status on Facebook, thus announcing to the world that you’re suddenly single (and sure, it doesn’t have anything to do with why you’ve been posting angry girl lyrics on your feed for the past two days…). Want to avoid the drama and the informal press release to all your peeps? Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has been studying the traffic and relationship status patterns of users over the past several years, and where you go and what you comment are both pretty good indicators of who you date or break up with.

According to David Kilpatrick, author of the upcoming book, “The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company That Is Connecting the World,” Zuckerberg and his team have managed to predict relationship trending with about 33% accuracy. “By examining friend relationships and communications patterns (Zuckerberg) could determine with about 33 percent accuracy who a user was going to be in a relationship with a week from now. To deduce this he studied who was looking at which profiles, who your friends were friends with, and who was newly single, among other indicators.”

Ok, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that your BFF is super-shady if she’s commenting on your boy’s feed daily, but it DOES raise the question why is Facebook so interested in who you’re dating to begin with? Given the recent privacy controversy the company os facing you’d think the last thing they’d what to do is come off like a kid brother sneaking a peek at your diary.
